So I was incredibly relieved when Nicole Harper sent me some of the new 5328s to try out. I worked up my Pacifica Bracelet, a class I often teach that includes about 200 4mm bicones. Here's a snap:

What I found was that, especially at this small size, there is virtually no visual difference at all! Though the new bicones have many more facets and are a bit more sparkly, the difference in a 4mm is really hard to see. I've heard from my suppliers and other beaders that in the larger sizes (8mm and above) the 5328s are much more brilliant, so the difference there might be more noticeable, but many of us beaders have big supplies of 3mms and 4mms, and I'm happy to report that the sky has not fallen!
One fantastic bonus (thank you Nikia for reminding me!) is that the holes are much smoother, which is great for us beadweavers who have a love/hate thing with crystals because they can tend to abrade thread, causing it to break. You can definitely tell the difference with the 5328s--the holes are much nicer.
Have you tried out the new 5328s? What has been your experience? Do tell!

wow... phasing out!!! I hadn't heard... I'm glad to hear there's not much difference with the new ones and I LOVE that bracelet!
Hey Jean! I just got some samples but they are 8mm so don't know what I'll do with them. They do seem to be sparkly. I'm interested in seeing if they are any smoother around the hole.
They ARE smoother around the hole, Nikia (totally forgot to put that in my post, so I've added it in). A definite bonus!
what useful observations on the new bicones, just the kind of review I like to read before purchasing new products. Thanks for sharing your insights, you are always so helpful!
I have not tried the new bicones. I'm mostly a seed beader, but I do love to sprinkle some of those bright crystals through out my work. I'm glad to hear that the holes are smoother. I'd already heard that they had more facets. Thanks for a most informative post.
Wow, gorgeous piece and great info, thanks for sharing, I haven't used the new ones, but have some 6mm black diamond AB on the way. Have a great holiday weekend!! Lisa C.
Artbeads just sent me some 4mm to play with and I did a simple beadwork bracelet. It's on my blog.
The beads are so much different to the naked eye, but I noticed how much more smooth the holes were. You actually see the difference. It's hard to believe they can make swarovski crystal better.
More sparkle and smoother holes...what's not to love? I'm looking forward to seeing them :-)
Beautiful bracelet!!! I love the name you've chosen for it too.
I've got soooooo many Swarivski crystals (mostly 4mms) that I've sworn I will not purchase any more until these are used up. I'm glad to hear there is no noticable difference.
By the way, how does one get companies like Art Beads and Rings & Things to send you beads to try out?
