Button Brooch

I wrote a blog on Beading Daily today entitled 5 Ways to Wear a Brooch. The exercise got me truly jazzed up about making brooches again! Since I don't wear them that often (I'm not a very good wardrobe planner), I never think to wear them. But they work up so fast that they're fun to make. I think I'll need to pull them out of the drawer more often.

Here's a brooch I made last night that I'd like to share with you. Blogger is being naughty and turning all my photos upside down, though, so click here to see the photo-only instructions. Please let me know if you can follow along okay. Enjoy!

Materials and Tools
2' of brass 28-gauge wire
1 green/gold 17mm glass vintage button with shank

2 brass 6mm eyelets
1 1/2" pin back
Wire cutters
Heavy-duty scissors
Chain-nose pliers
Ballpoint pen
Eyelet setter
Dremel tool and 7/64" drill bit

Jean, The instructions were pretty clear except for one thing; after you wrapped the shank of the button and twisted the wires together for a way past the button itself, it seems like you went back and cut the wires short next to the shank. Is that the way it is or did I just misinterprete the picture? Cute. I wouldn't stop there. Where the brads go in, looks to me like a perfect place to add on some vintage beads! Thanks again for the pattern. It gave me some ideas. Pat

You got it, Pat! You're going to twist those wires tight and then cut the twist for a clean finish. Then go back in with chain-nose pliers to tuck that twist out of the way.

I was playing around with the beads there, too, but couldn't come up with something that looked clean enough without using glue. Let me know what you come up with!

Jean, I enjoyed your article on brooches on Beading Daily. I have lots of vintage brooches and love wearing them. Your ideas were right on! I never get more attention than when I have a brooch on my favorite handbag.. Wear it on your jacket, nothing. Put it on your purse, it's clever! Who knew??
This is a sweet project! Thanks for sharing :)
