Winterwunder

I've been away from the computer and immersed in holiday action for a week now. What a nice change! Seems like these last weeks of December just roll right over the brain like a bottle of absinthe, making you forget any deadlines and commitments that don't involve family or friends. I'll have to admit--it's a great high.

We spent three days at my brother's cabin in Northern Wisconsin at the beginning of this week. It was 20 below outside, snowing like mad, and there was no running water, but we had such an incredible time sledding, snowmobiling, and tromping around in the drifts. The food was great, too. Why does food taste better at the cabin?

Suzy and I cut down a little Christmas tree in her yard. The kids decorated it with big beaded ornaments and strands of lights and it made the cabin really festive while we thawed out, playing Quiddler, listening to Bing, and doing puzzles.

Isn't it fun to see other people's Christmas trees? I think they tell a lot about a person. For instance, Suzy's tree is always cut out of the forest and her ornaments are very color-coordinated and have an overall style.

Our tree (below) is always jam-packed with homemade ornaments--not only those that my kids have made, but also with ornaments my siblings and I made when we were young. It's a fake tree we've had for years, so a little ramshackle. And with all those ornaments and huge meant-for-the-outdoors lights it looks a bit chaotic, like a fireworks factory blew up. But it's cheery and happy and we like it. We just don't keep it up for long because it ultimately turns into a giant cat toy. Carmen perches in it all the time and it's getting pretty beat up.

I hope you're enjoying these steamrolling holiday weeks as much as I am. I guess for me it's the time I give myself permission to slow down, take stock, and be truly thankful for all the things in my life that make it so worth living. You're part of that, so thank you!

My Holiday Gift to You--Free Project!

A couple months ago I was hustling to finish a sample of my Bling Bracelet for a class I was teaching at Studio Beads. In my haste I forgot to add the little true-cut seed beads at the ends of each gemstone wrapped-loop dangle. Oh, well. That’s what happens when you bead blurry-eyed at 2:00 in the morning. Anyway, I carefully dismantled the bracelet, removed the 20 faulty dangles, made new ones, and promptly fell asleep where I was sitting.

I didn't want to abandon the faulty dangles, so I incorporated them into a pair of earrings. Here's how I made them:

Materials
I’ve listed the materials I used for this pink and purple version, but you can use any type of metal or small accent beads in your design.
10 crazy lace agate 6x4mm faceted rondelles
10 garnet 5x6mm flat diamonds
20 gold-filled 1 1/2" head pins
6 gold-filled 4x6mm oval jump rings
1 pair ear wires

Tools

Chain-nose pliers
Round-nose pliers
Wire cutters

1) String 1 stone on 1 head pin and form a wrapped loop . Set aside. Repeat to make a total of 20 dangles.

2) Open one jump ring and string 1 garnet dangle, 1 agate dangle, 1 garnet dangle, and 1 agate dangle. Close the ring.

3) Open 1 jump ring and string 1 agate dangle, 1 garnet dangle, the jump ring from Step 2, 1 garnet dangle, and 1 agate dangle. Close the ring.

4) Open 1 jump ring and string 1 agate dangle, the jump ring from Step 3, 1 garnet dangle, and 1 ear wire. Close the ring.

5) Repeat Steps 2-4 to make a second earring.

Here's to a peaceful and happy holiday season!

9 Ladies Dancing

My very sweet and talented niece, Maddie, is coming to stay over the holidays, so I need to turn our extra room (formerly Joe's office, my "gym", and general drop-kick-junk-into-it room) into a proper guest room. While cleaning I ran into a big box of drawings I did before kids and beads came into my life. Oh, man, did I have fun drawing.

One thing I enjoyed doing every year was create a calender to give to family and friends. For 1995 I illustrated the 12 Days of Christmas. Thought you might get a kick out of 9 Ladies Dancing.

Errrreeeee!!!!

My Amazon order came today--West Side Story for Emma and They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky for Dylan. And lookie lookie what else SantaMama bought--just for herself! Woohoo!!

I love power tools. Especially itty bitty ones that drill itty bitty holes! I was so excited I snuck out of the office to meet my friend Annie Singer at Ax-man (our local surplus store) to find things to drill and cut and polish and generally upcycle.

Here's a sneak peek at the top secret project I'm working on. This one feels like a new direction for me. It's one of those projects that makes me stretch creatively. It's encouraged me to gather up and use all the stuff in my creative arsenal, like beading, wirework, cold connections, drawing, product design, recycling, thrift...

Strangely thrilling!

New Faves

My friend Andrew Thornton sent me a package with a beautiful piece in it that will be included in a book I'm working on for Fall 2009. Andrew is so talented and thoughtful. If you want to read the writings of a true artist, I suggest you check out his blog--it's very inspirational, especially for working artists. Anyway, he also included in the package a gorgeous card and some goodies from Green Girl Studios all wrapped up in a pretty lavender organza bag. Who's the lucky girl?!

I was so overwhelmed at the beauty of the cityscape charms he sent. They remind me of a trip I took to Europe a long time ago. The charms are like little magic memory plates. I'm super busy right now, but I felt compelled to drop everything and make a pair of earrings with the charms. I paired them with some sterling silver findings, antiqued brass chain, copper bead caps, and my new favorite--gray opal 2XAB crystals. I'm keeping these for myself! I know I'll wear them every day. Thank you, Andrew. Not only for the charms, but for giving me a chance to take a creative break.

Moonlighting

I've been spending Emma's homework time this week making projects for Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' website. It works out perfectly...I can rack my brain to answer 5th-grade math questions AND bead at the same time. Supermom!

Have you checked out FMG's website lately? Their Beading Resources section is pretty amazing. Just type in a question and you'll likely get not one, but several answers.

FMG's media content editor Tammy Honaman noticed that the site's Project Gallery was woefully short on lanyards, so I put together a couple and sent them off yesterday. Here's a sneak peek. Not a bad idea for teachers gifts...but from the classroom stories I hear from Emma, maybe her teachers could do with something a little stronger...perhaps liquid?
